A prescription drug is usually only sold over the counter in pharmacies. The drug's maker has said it could cost between £5,000 and £10,000 for a pack of four tablets in a supply of six pills.
A spokeswoman for Boots, the UK's biggest drugmaker, said: “We have been trying to get the drug on the NHS since 2016 and have been able to reduce our cost by £6,000 a month.”
The prescription drug, which has been available on the NHS since 1998, is a type of prescription medicine called a PDE5 inhibitor. It works by relaxing muscles and dilating blood vessels. It’s given to patients to help them take their medicines more effectively, and can be bought over the counter at pharmacies.
It is not a branded medicine and is not available to anyone under 18, and has not been assessed by the government for safety or effectiveness. It costs between £10,000 and £20,000 a month.
Boots said it would advise customers to stop taking the drug.
